Thanksgiving Punch

This Thanksgiving Punch is my fall take on one of the best holiday drinks. It has a refreshing blend of sweet apple cider and tart cranberry juice along with fresh orange juice and plenty of sparkling ginger ale.

Homemade Thanksgiving Punch in a glass pitcher with apple cider and cranberry juice plus orange slices and apples and cranberries.

My Thanksgiving Punch recipe starts by combining apple cider with cranberry juice and orange juice. The sweet and tart juices are then chilled with cinnamon until cold for a refreshing and delicious drink.

The other key to this Thanksgiving Punch is the fresh fruit. Not only does it have crisp apple slices but it also has bright orange rounds and whole cranberries for a festive finish. Every component of this Thanksgiving Punch is flavorful on its own which means the whole thing is ridiculously good. I love serving it alongside my Autumn Charcuterie Board for an easy holiday appetizer spread.

Ingredients

Thanksgiving Punch ingredients including apple cider and cranberry juice and ginger ale with oranges and apples and fresh cranberries.

Here is what I use for this recipe :

  • Apple cider: Provides a naturally sweet apple flavor and a rich golden color that forms the autumn-inspired base of the punch.
  • Cranberry juice: Adds a tart fruity contrast and gives the punch its festive reddish amber color while balancing the sweetness of the cider.
  • Orange juice: Introduces bright citrus flavor that softens the tartness of the cranberry juice and complements the apple cider.
  • Ginger ale: Creates a light sparkling finish with gentle ginger sweetness and refreshing bubbles that make the punch lively.
  • Red apple: Adds crisp fresh slices that float throughout the punch and contribute natural sweetness and attractive autumn color.
  • Orange: Provides thin citrus rounds that decorate the punch and gradually release fresh orange aroma into the drink.
  • Fresh cranberries: Add colorful floating accents and a festive Thanksgiving appearance while contributing a subtle cranberry aroma.
  • Cinnamon stick: Infuses the juice mixture with a gentle warming spice note that complements the cider without overpowering the fruit.
  • Ice cubes: Keep individual servings refreshingly cold without diluting the entire pitcher before guests are ready to drink.

Tools I Use :

  • Large glass pitcher: Holds the combined fruit juices and cinnamon during chilling while providing enough space for ginger ale and floating fresh fruit before serving.
  • Wooden cutting board: Provides a stable food-safe area for slicing the apple and orange into pieces suitable for floating in the punch.
  • Sharp kitchen knife: Cuts the apple into thin wedges and the orange into neat rounds while allowing controlled slicing and easy removal of seeds.
  • Measuring cups: Measure the apple cider and cranberry juice and orange juice and ginger ale accurately to maintain the intended sweet and tart balance.
  • Long mixing spoon: Combines the juices evenly before chilling and helps distribute the added fruit without crushing delicate orange slices.
  • Refrigerator: Chills the mixed juices and gently infuses the cinnamon flavor before the sparkling ginger ale is introduced.
  • Four clear serving glasses: Hold individual portions of finished Thanksgiving Punch while displaying the festive fruit colors and sparkling liquid.

Instructions

Step 1: Slice the apple and orange into thin rounds

Thinly sliced red apples and orange rounds ready for homemade Thanksgiving Punch.

Wash the apple and orange thoroughly before cutting the apple into thin wedges and the orange into thin circular slices. Remove the apple core and any visible orange seeds while keeping the colorful fruit peels intact. Arrange the sliced fruit loosely with some pieces overlapping and others resting separately. Keep the 1/2 cup of whole cranberries nearby for adding later because they will provide the final festive touch.

Tip: Keep the apple peel attached for extra color and cut the slices to slightly different thicknesses for a natural homemade appearance.

Step 2: Combine the fruit juices and infuse with cinnamon

Apple cider and cranberry juice combined with orange juice and a cinnamon stick in a glass pitcher.

Pour the 2 cups of apple cider into a large glass pitcher and follow with 1 cup of cranberry juice and 1/2 cup of orange juice. Stir until the separate juice colors blend into a rich reddish amber mixture with a smooth and uniform liquid consistency. Add the whole cinnamon stick and submerge it partially in the juice. Refrigerate the pitcher for 30 minutes so the punch becomes cold while the cinnamon gently infuses the blended juices.

Tip: Chilling the juice base before adding ginger ale helps preserve the bubbles and prevents the finished punch from becoming flat.

Step 3: Add ginger ale and scatter the fresh fruit

Remove the chilled pitcher from the refrigerator and slowly pour in 1 cup of ginger ale. The punch will develop a delicate layer of sparkling bubbles as the clear soda blends into the darker juice mixture. Add the prepared apple wedges and orange rounds along with 1/2 cup of fresh cranberries. Let the fruit float naturally throughout the pitcher while some pieces overlap and others settle at different depths. The finished punch should have visible fruit and a refreshing sparkling appearance.

Tip: Add ginger ale immediately before serving and scatter the fruit gently so the punch stays fizzy while the citrus remains attractive.

Step 4: Pour the chilled punch over ice and serve

Single glass of Thanksgiving Punch with ice and apple slices and orange rounds and fresh cranberries.

Divide the 2 cups of ice cubes among four clear serving glasses and pour the finished Thanksgiving Punch over the ice. Allow the juice to settle between the cubes while small bubbles rise naturally through the drink. Transfer a few apple wedges and an orange slice into each glass and distribute the fresh cranberries among the servings. Serve immediately while the punch is cold and sparkling with the fruit visible through the glass.

Tip: Use chilled serving glasses and add the ice immediately before pouring so each serving stays cold without excessive dilution.

Pro Tips

  • Choose cloudy unfiltered apple cider for a richer fall flavor and use unsweetened cranberry juice if you prefer a more tart finish.
  • Refrigerate the juice mixture before adding ginger ale because pouring soda into a warm drink will cause its bubbles to disappear faster.
  • Slice the apple shortly before serving so it stays crisp and fresh while the orange rounds remain colorful inside the pitcher.
  • Keep the ice in individual glasses instead of adding it to the pitcher because melting ice can dilute the punch during a long holiday meal.

Storage Instructions

Store leftover Thanksgiving Punch in a tightly covered glass pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator. Remove the apple slices and orange rounds before storing because the fruit can soften and lose its fresh texture after sitting in the juice for an extended period. For the best flavor and food safety refrigerate leftover punch promptly and enjoy it within 2 days.

The ginger ale will gradually lose carbonation during storage although the apple and cranberry flavors will remain pleasant. If you prepare the drink in advance then combine the apple cider and cranberry juice and orange juice with the cinnamon stick before refrigerating. Keep the ginger ale sealed separately and store the sliced fruit in an airtight container until shortly before serving.

The juice base can be prepared up to 24 hours ahead for convenient holiday entertaining. Freezing the finished sparkling punch is not recommended because the carbonation disappears and the fresh fruit becomes soft after thawing. However you can freeze the juice mixture without ginger ale or fruit in ice cube trays and use those frozen cubes to chill future servings without introducing plain water.

Never store leftover punch with melted serving ice because it will dilute the flavor and make the drink taste weaker. Discard any punch that has remained at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
