This Mini Chicago-Style Hot Dogs recipe is one of my favorite appetizers when I’m craving a classic Chicago hot dog but want something a little smaller. Inspired by the famous Chicago-style hot dog I’ve packed these mini buns with juicy beef hot dogs and plenty of fresh vegetables along with sweet relish and tangy mustard.

They’re also loaded with flavor from the crunchy pickle spears and sport peppers and they’re so easy to customize based on whatever toppings you have in your fridge or how spicy you want to make them! I also love prepping the toppings ahead and serving these alongside Buffalo Chicken Sliders for game day parties!
Ingredients

Here is what I use for this recipe :
- Mini all-beef hot dogs: These provide the savory and juicy base of the recipe while delivering the traditional beef flavor associated with Chicago-style hot dogs. Choose fully cooked mini beef hot dogs that fit comfortably inside small buns.
- Mini poppy seed hot dog buns: Soft poppy seed buns hold the hot dogs and all their toppings while adding the distinctive texture associated with Chicago-style hot dogs. Choose buns that are split along the top or side for easy filling.
- Yellow mustard: Classic yellow mustard adds bright tanginess that balances the rich beef and sweet relish. Its recognizable yellow color also creates the traditional Chicago-style appearance.
- Neon green sweet pickle relish: Bright green sweet relish delivers a sweet and tangy contrast to the salty beef hot dogs. Traditional Chicago-style relish gives the finished appetizer its recognizable vibrant green appearance.
- White onion: Finely diced white onion adds a sharp fresh bite and crunchy texture that contrasts with the soft buns and warm hot dogs. Its small pieces distribute easily across the mini portions.
- Roma tomatoes: Fresh Roma tomatoes provide juicy sweetness and bright red color. Cutting each tomato into four narrow wedges creates eight pieces that fit neatly beside the mini hot dogs.
- Dill pickle spears: Cut each pickle spear lengthwise into two thinner pieces to make eight mini spears. Their crisp texture and tangy flavor are essential parts of the traditional Chicago-style topping combination.
- Sport peppers: These small pickled peppers add the characteristic spicy and vinegary kick to Chicago-style hot dogs. Use one pepper for each mini hot dog and choose smaller peppers when possible.
- Celery salt: A light finishing sprinkle brings together the mustard and pickles and vegetables while adding the distinctive savory seasoning found on traditional Chicago-style hot dogs.
Tools I Use :
- Wooden cutting board: Provides a stable food-safe area for chopping the onion and cutting the tomatoes and pickle spears into smaller portions.
- Sharp kitchen knife: Allows the vegetables and pickle spears to be cut cleanly into pieces that fit inside the mini hot dog buns.
- Medium saucepan: Holds the simmering water and allows the mini beef hot dogs to heat gently and evenly without drying out.
- Steamer basket with lid: Holds the poppy seed buns above simmering water so they soften with steam while remaining separate from the water.
- Small mixing bowls: Keep the mustard and relish and diced vegetables separate and organized while the hot dogs and buns are warming.
- Kitchen tongs: Help remove the heated hot dogs from the saucepan and transfer them into the buns without tearing their casings.
- Measuring cups and spoons: Measure the mustard and relish and celery salt accurately so the toppings remain balanced across all eight servings.
- Large serving platter: Provides enough space to arrange all eight assembled mini hot dogs for serving at a party or family gathering.
- Small white serving plate: Holds one finished mini hot dog for an individual serving while keeping the assembled toppings visible.
Instructions
Step 1: Dice the onion and cut the tomatoes and pickles

Start by peeling half a medium white onion and chopping it into small pieces. Keep the pieces fairly fine so they fit easily onto the mini hot dogs without falling off with every bite. Cut the two Roma tomatoes into four narrow wedges each to make eight pieces. Next slice the four dill pickle spears lengthwise to make eight thinner spears. The tomato wedges should remain firm and the pickle pieces should be long enough to rest beside the hot dogs. Keep the chopped onion and tomato wedges and pickle spears in separate groups so they are ready for assembly.
Tip: Cut the vegetables into smaller pieces than you would for regular hot dogs so every mini portion gets a balanced combination of toppings.
Step 2: Simmer the mini beef hot dogs until heated through

Bring enough water to a gentle simmer in a medium saucepan to cover the mini beef hot dogs. Add all eight hot dogs and allow them to heat for about five to seven minutes or according to the package instructions. Keep the water at a gentle simmer instead of a rolling boil so the casings stay intact. As the hot dogs warm they become slightly plumper and their casings turn a deeper reddish brown. Move them gently so they heat evenly. Once they are hot all the way through remove them from the water and allow the excess moisture to drain away before assembly.
Tip: Avoid rapidly boiling the hot dogs because gentle simmering helps preserve their juicy texture and prevents the casings from splitting.
Step 3: Steam the poppy seed buns until soft

Place the eight mini poppy seed buns in a steamer basket above gently simmering water and cover them for about one to two minutes. The steam will soften the bread while helping the buns become flexible enough to hold the toppings without tearing. Remove the buns as soon as they feel warm and pillowy. Their surfaces should look slightly softer while the poppy seeds remain visible and the openings become easier to spread apart. Avoid leaving them over the steam for too long because excess moisture can make the bread soggy.
Tip: Steam the buns just before assembly because warm flexible bread holds the hot dogs and vegetables better without becoming dry or crumbly.
Step 4: Fill the buns and add the classic Chicago toppings

Transfer the eight warm buns to a large serving platter and place one cooked mini beef hot dog inside each bun. Drizzle the yellow mustard over the hot dogs in loose lines before spooning the bright green sweet pickle relish along one side. Add the finely diced white onion so it settles between the mustard and relish. Tuck one Roma tomato wedge and one thin dill pickle spear beside each hot dog. Finish this assembly stage by placing one whole sport pepper over or beside each portion. The toppings should sit closely together without completely hiding the beef hot dogs. Leave room for the final celery salt seasoning.
Tip: Add the toppings in small amounts and keep the pickle spear beside the hot dog so the colorful ingredients remain visible and easy to eat.
Step 5: Sprinkle with celery salt and serve one mini hot dog

Sprinkle the remaining celery salt lightly across all eight assembled mini hot dogs just before serving. The seasoning should fall over the vegetables and mustard while leaving the colorful toppings clearly visible. This final touch adds the familiar savory flavor that makes Chicago-style hot dogs stand out. Transfer one fully assembled mini hot dog onto a small white serving plate for an individual portion. Keep the juicy beef visible beneath the mustard and relish while allowing the tomato wedge and pickle spear and sport pepper to rest naturally along the sides. Serve while the hot dog is warm and the vegetables are still crisp.
Tip: Add celery salt just before serving and avoid overloading the mini buns so each hot dog stays easy to hold and enjoy at a party.
Pro Tips
- Choose fully cooked all-beef mini hot dogs with firm casings because they hold their shape better and deliver classic Chicago-style flavor.
- Cut the tomato wedges and pickle spears thin enough to fit the mini buns while keeping their crisp texture and bright colors visible.
- Prepare the vegetable toppings several hours ahead and refrigerate them separately so assembling the hot dogs stays quick and easy.
- Keep the yellow mustard and sweet relish in separate layers and finish with celery salt just before serving for the best flavor balance.
Storage Instructions
For the best texture serve Mini Chicago-Style Hot Dogs immediately after assembling them. The warm buns and juicy beef taste best when combined with fresh crisp vegetables. Assembled hot dogs can become soggy because the mustard and relish and tomato juices gradually soak into the bread. If you have leftover cooked mini hot dogs then allow them to cool and transfer them to an airtight container.
Refrigerate them promptly and use within three to four days. Keep the buns and chopped vegetable toppings in separate containers so the ingredients maintain their texture. Store the chopped onion and tomatoes and sliced pickles in covered containers in the refrigerator. The onions and pickles can usually be prepared a day ahead while the tomatoes are best cut closer to serving time.
Keep the mustard and relish covered and refrigerated according to their package instructions. To reheat the hot dogs place them in gently simmering water until steaming hot throughout. Warm the buns separately for about one minute and then assemble with fresh or properly stored toppings. Avoid reheating fully assembled hot dogs because the vegetables lose their crunch and the buns can become overly soft.
For longer storage freeze the cooked beef hot dogs without any toppings or buns if they have not already been frozen and thawed multiple times. Wrap them securely and use within one to two months for the best quality. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating and assembling with fresh toppings.
