This Homemade Cranberry Sauce recipe is one of my favorite holiday sides when I’m craving something bright but want something fresher than the canned version and inspired by classic Thanksgiving cranberry sauce I’ve packed mine with tart cranberries and fresh orange plus just enough sugar for balance.

It’s also loaded with flavor from fresh orange juice and warm cinnamon and it’s so easy to customize based on whatever citrus you have in your fridge or spices you want to add.
I also love prepping the sauce ahead and enjoying it throughout the week with Roast Turkey for easy holiday meals.
Ingredients

Here is what I use for this recipe :
- Fresh cranberries: Fresh cranberries provide the tart berry flavor and natural pectin that thickens the sauce as the berries burst.
- Granulated sugar: Granulated sugar balances the natural tartness and helps create a glossy syrup around the softened cranberries.
- Fresh orange juice: Fresh orange juice adds citrus sweetness and enough liquid to help the cranberries soften evenly.
- Water: Water provides additional cooking liquid so the berries can simmer without the sugar becoming overly concentrated.
- Orange zest: Orange zest adds concentrated citrus aroma and gives the finished sauce a fresh holiday flavor.
- Ground cinnamon: Ground cinnamon adds gentle warmth that complements the tart cranberries and bright citrus.
- Fine salt: Fine salt sharpens the fruit flavor and keeps the sweetness from tasting flat.
Tools I Use :
- Medium saucepan: Provides enough room for the cranberries to simmer and burst while allowing the liquid to reduce evenly.
- Measuring cups: Measures the sugar and orange juice and water accurately so the sauce has the correct sweet tart balance.
- Measuring spoons: Measures the orange zest and cinnamon consistently so the citrus and spice flavors stay balanced.
- Stirring spoon: Moves the berries through the simmering liquid and helps prevent concentrated sugar from sticking during reduction.
- Small serving bowl: Holds the finished cranberry sauce for serving while keeping its thick spoonable texture visible.
Instructions
Step 1: Combine the cranberries with the citrus mixture

Add the 12 ounces of fresh cranberries with the 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup orange juice and 1/2 cup water so the berries sit loosely throughout the liquid with some floating and others resting lower in the saucepan. Mix in the 1 teaspoon orange zest with the 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and pinch of salt so tiny flecks become unevenly distributed through the pale red liquid while the cranberries remain firm and whole.
Tip: Use fresh or frozen cranberries without thawing because both soften well and release enough natural pectin for a thick sauce.
Step 2: Simmer until the cranberries begin to burst

Cook the cranberry mixture until many berries split open and release deep red juice while several berries stay partly whole and the liquid becomes visibly darker and more opaque. Stir the softened berries so they shift toward the center and edges in irregular clusters while the released fruit begins blending into the syrup and creating a loose chunky texture.
Tip: Keep some berries partly intact while simmering because their uneven texture makes the finished sauce look homemade and fresh.
Step 3: Reduce the sauce until thick and glossy

Continue cooking until the released cranberry juices reduce into a thick ruby sauce that clings around irregular berry pieces and leaves only small pockets of thinner liquid between them. Fold the mixture so softened berries move from the edges toward the center and the texture becomes glossy and spoonable with uneven chunks and natural streaks of darker cranberry color.
Tip: Stop cooking when the sauce still looks slightly loose because it thickens noticeably as it cools and the natural pectin sets.
Step 4: Serve a portion with orange zest

Spoon one portion of the cooled Homemade Cranberry Sauce into a small white serving bowl so the thick sauce settles naturally with uneven peaks and visible berry pieces instead of forming a smooth perfect mound. Finish with a few irregular curls of orange zest so the garnish sits casually across one side while the deep ruby sauce remains visible underneath.
Tip: Chill the sauce before serving for a firmer texture or serve it slightly warm when you want a softer and more spoonable consistency.
Pro Tips
- Choose firm bright cranberries and remove any soft berries so the finished sauce has cleaner flavor and better natural texture.
- Let several cranberries stay partly whole because the irregular berry pieces give the sauce a more appealing homemade appearance.
- Taste the sauce after it cools because cranberry flavor becomes more balanced and the sweetness can seem stronger once chilled.
- Make the sauce a day ahead when possible because resting gives the orange and cranberry flavors time to blend more completely.
Storage Instructions
Let the Homemade Cranberry Sauce cool before transferring it into a covered food storage container so excess steam does not create extra moisture inside. Keep the sauce refrigerated for up to one week and scoop out only the amount you need so the remaining portion stays fresh and clean. For longer storage freeze the cooled sauce in a freezer safe container with a little room for expansion and use it within about two months. Thaw frozen cranberry sauce overnight in the refrigerator and stir it gently before serving so the berry pieces and thick syrup become evenly distributed again.
