Description

This easy Crockpot Orange Chicken brings tender chicken and a glossy citrus sauce together with quick prep and simple pantry ingredients. It is one of the best ideas for a healthy weeknight dinner and it also works beautifully for meal prep. The sweet and savory flavor feels special enough for a holiday potluck brunch or party while the slow cooker keeps the method easy and dependable for busy days. Serve it with rice or vegetables for a simple complete meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup Orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 1 quarter cup Low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 third cup Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh ginger
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 quarter teaspoon Red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Cold water
  • 4 cups Cooked white rice
  • 2 Green onions
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cut the two pounds of chicken into irregular one inch pieces so every portion cooks at a similar pace. Keep the pieces naturally uneven rather than shaping them into identical cubes. The chicken changes from two whole breasts into many loose bite sized pieces with visible cut surfaces and varied edges.
  2. Combine the orange juice with the zest and soy sauce and honey and rice vinegar and ginger and garlic and red pepper flakes. Mix until the honey dissolves and the separate liquids become one amber orange sauce. The mixture changes from separate ingredients into a fluid sauce with tiny visible flecks of zest and ginger suspended throughout.
  3. Transfer the two pounds of cut chicken into the slow cooker and pour the orange sauce over the pieces. Fold the chicken through the liquid until every piece is partly coated while some upper surfaces remain visible. The pale chicken becomes glossy and loosely arranged in an uneven layer with orange sauce collecting between the pieces.
  4. Cook the coated chicken until the pieces turn fully opaque and tender while releasing juices into the sauce. Stir once during the final part of cooking so the pieces shift and cook through evenly. The chicken changes from pale pink to light golden beige while the sauce becomes slightly darker and gently bubbling with softened garlic and ginger flecks.
  5. Stir the cornstarch with the cold water until smooth and fold the slurry into the hot chicken mixture. Continue cooking until the liquid transforms into a glossy sauce that coats every piece. The sauce changes from thin and pooling to thick and shiny while the chicken shifts into a looser mound with irregular amber coating and darker caramel colored patches.
  6. Spoon one quarter of the cooked white rice onto a white plate and add one quarter of the saucy chicken over the top. Allow several pieces to overlap naturally while leaving part of the rice visible. Finish with unevenly scattered green onion slices and sesame seeds. The final portion shows glossy sauce and tender irregular chicken with natural color variation and casual homemade plating.

Notes

Pro Tips:

  • Cut the chicken into similar sized pieces so every bite cooks through at the same pace without smaller pieces becoming dry.
  • Use fresh orange zest along with the juice because the zest provides concentrated citrus flavor that bottled juice cannot match.
  • Add the cornstarch slurry near the end of cooking so the sauce thickens smoothly without becoming overly dense or gummy.
  • Keep the slow cooker covered during cooking because lifting the lid releases heat and can noticeably extend the cooking time.

Storage: Allow leftover Crockpot Orange Chicken to cool before transferring it into a sealed container. Refrigerate it within two hours so the chicken remains safe and the sauce keeps its fresh citrus flavor. Store the chicken and rice in separate containers when possible because the rice will otherwise absorb most of the sauce. The chicken keeps well in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat one portion gently until the chicken is steaming throughout. Add a small splash of orange juice or water if the chilled sauce has become thicker than desired. Freeze the cooled chicken and sauce without the rice for up to three months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before reheating and prepare fresh rice for the best texture.
