Description

This Christmas Tree Puff Pastry is an easy and festive dessert made with golden flaky pastry and a sweet cinnamon sugar filling. With quick preparation and simple ingredients it is one of the best holiday baking ideas for Christmas brunch or a family party. The buttery layers bake into crispy twists with a soft cinnamon center and a beautiful tree shape. Serve it with fresh fruit for a healthy balance or enjoy it warm as a cozy sweet treat during the holiday season.

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets (about 8.8 ounces or 250 grams each) Puff pastry sheets
  • 2 tablespoons melted Unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup packed Light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 1 large Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Water
  • 1 tablespoon Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Add the packed light brown sugar and ground cinnamon to a small mixing bowl. Stir the ingredients together until the cinnamon is distributed throughout the sugar and the mixture develops an even warm brown color.

Break apart any large sugar clumps with the back of a spoon while leaving a few smaller pieces for a naturally textured filling. The finished mixture should look loose and slightly crumbly rather than wet or pasty.

  2. Unfold the first thawed puff pastry sheet into a rectangle on a parchment-lined baking tray and gently flatten any prominent folds. Spread the melted butter across the pastry while leaving a narrow border around the edges and then scatter the cinnamon sugar mixture over the buttered surface.

Place the second puff pastry sheet directly over the first and lightly press the edges together so the filling stays between the layers. The pastry should now form one thick rectangle with faint brown filling visible along some uneven edges.

  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter trim the layered rectangle into a tall triangle with a small rectangular trunk at the bottom. Cut a small star from the larger offcuts and set it above the tree while keeping any remaining scraps for separate pastry bites.

Cut horizontal strips into both sides of the triangle while leaving an uncut center strip about one and a half inches wide. Gently twist each branch away from the center with the lower branches receiving two turns and the shorter upper branches receiving one turn. Keep the shaped tree on the same parchment-lined baking tray and space the branches naturally so they can expand during baking.

  4. Beat the large egg with one teaspoon of water until the mixture is smooth and lightly frothy. Brush a thin coating over the exposed surface of the Christmas tree and the pastry star while avoiding heavy pooling between the twists.

Gently press the star into place at the top of the tree. The pale pastry should now have a glossy finish with darker cinnamon seams visible between the branches and the entire shaped tree should remain on the baking tray ready for the oven.

  5. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 200 degrees Celsius and bake the shaped Christmas tree on the middle rack for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Watch as the twisted branches expand and separate into flaky layers while the cinnamon sugar filling melts into the pastry.

Remove the baking tray when the tree is richly golden with crisp edges and darker caramelized seams. Allow it to cool on the tray for about 5 minutes so the pastry firms up and the hot sugar filling settles before transferring it.

  6. Carefully transfer the warm baked Christmas tree to a large serving plate and dust the surface lightly with powdered sugar. The sugar should settle unevenly across the golden twisted branches and create a delicate snowy finish without hiding the flaky pastry layers.

Gently pull away one lower branch and place that single portion on a separate white dessert plate. The broken edge should reveal thin buttery pastry layers and soft cinnamon sugar filling while the outside remains crisp and deeply golden. Serve the portion warm for the best texture.

Notes

Pro Tips:

  • Keep the puff pastry chilled until assembly because warm dough becomes sticky and loses some of its flaky structure during baking.
  • Use a sharp cutter for the branches and avoid dragging the blade because clean cuts help the pastry layers rise more evenly.
  • Leave enough room between the twisted branches because they will puff considerably as the butter layers expand in the oven.
  • Let the pastry cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar so the delicate snowy finish remains visible on the golden crust.

Storage: Christmas Tree Puff Pastry tastes best on the day it is baked because the outside stays wonderfully crisp while the cinnamon filling remains soft. If you have leftovers then allow the pastry to cool completely before storing it so trapped steam does not make the layers soggy.

Place leftover branches in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature for up to 2 days in a cool and dry environment. You can also refrigerate them for up to 4 days although the pastry will gradually lose some of its delicate crunch.

For longer storage wrap individual baked branches and place them in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Separate the pieces with parchment paper so the fragile flaky layers do not become crushed or stick together during freezing.

To reheat place the pastry on a baking tray in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for approximately 5 to 8 minutes or until heated through and crisp again. Frozen portions may require additional time and should be reheated until fully warm. Avoid the microwave when possible because it tends to soften the flaky layers instead of restoring their original texture.
