Peach Muffins

Our family discovered these Peach Muffins during the height of summer. Our boys were hosting a cousin from Detroit at our remote lake cottage where they frolicked in the lake during the day and toasted marshmallows around the bonfire every night.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Peach Muffins in separate small containers

Here is what I use for this recipe and you can adjust nuts or spices based on preference:

  • all purpose flour: Builds the soft muffin crumb and gives the batter enough structure to rise.
  • granulated sugar: Sweetens the muffins and helps the tops turn lightly golden.
  • baking powder: Lifts the batter so the muffins bake tall and tender.
  • ground cinnamon: Adds warm spice that makes the peaches taste sweeter.
  • fine salt: Balances the sweetness and strengthens the flavor of the batter.
  • large eggs: Bind the batter and help create a soft bakery style texture.
  • whole milk: Adds moisture and keeps the crumb tender.
  • unsalted butter: Adds richness and helps the muffins bake with soft golden edges.
  • vanilla extract: Rounds out the peach flavor with gentle sweetness.
  • fresh peaches: Bring juicy fruit pockets and soft summer flavor throughout the muffins.
  • light brown sugar: Creates a sweet crumbly topping with deeper caramel notes.
  • rolled oats: Add a rustic topping texture and light chew.
  • extra flour for topping: Helps the topping form tender little clusters.
  • cold butter for topping: Creates uneven buttery crumbs that bake crisp on top.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Mixing bowl: Holds the batter while dry and wet ingredients are combined.
  • Small bowls: Keep topping ingredients and wet ingredients separated before mixing.
  • Muffin tin: Shapes the batter into eight individual muffins while they bake.
  • Cutting board: Provides a safe surface for cutting peaches into small pieces.
  • Measuring cups and spoons: Keep the ingredient amounts consistent for reliable texture.
  • Cooling rack: Lets the muffins cool evenly so the bottoms do not steam.

Instructions

Step 1: Dice the peaches

The peaches change from whole fruit into small uneven chunks with soft orange edges and pale yellow centers. The pieces sit loosely with different sizes so the fruit will scatter through the batter without looking too perfect.

Tip: Cut the peaches into uneven small pieces so every muffin gets juicy pockets without turning the batter watery.

Step 2: Mix the batter

Peach Muffins batter mixed until lumpy

The flour mixture and wet ingredients become a thick pale batter with a few soft streaks still visible. The surface looks lumpy and homemade because the batter is mixed just enough to come together.

Tip: Stop mixing while the batter still looks a little lumpy because overmixing can make Peach Muffins dense.

Step 3: Fold in the peaches

The diced peaches move through the batter and create bright orange pockets against the pale mixture. Some fruit stays near the top while some pieces sink halfway in so the batter looks folded rather than smooth.

Tip: Fold gently until the peaches are only partly hidden so the fruit stays intact and the muffin crumb stays soft.

Step 4: Fill the muffin tin

Eight Peach Muffins before baking in a muffin tin

The peach batter changes from one large mass into eight separate mounds in the muffin cups. Crumb topping is scattered unevenly over each mound with some bare batter showing and some oats sitting at the edges.

Tip: Fill the cups unevenly but close to the same height so the muffins rise naturally and bake at the same pace.

Step 5: Bake until golden

The batter rises into domed muffins with cracked tops and lightly browned crumb clusters. Peach pieces soften into glossy spots and the tops look uneven with darker edges and pale centers.

Tip: Bake until the tops spring back and the crumb looks golden so the centers finish without drying out.

Step 6: Serve a split muffin

Split Peach Muffin showing tender crumb and peach pieces

One muffin moves from the tin to a plate and is split open to show the tender inside. The crumb looks soft and slightly uneven with peach pieces tucked inside and a few crumb bits falling around the portion.

Tip: Let the muffins rest briefly before splitting so the inside stays tender and the peach pieces do not tear the crumb.

Pro Tips

  • Use ripe but firm peaches so the fruit softens in the oven while still holding small juicy pieces in every muffin.
  • Do not smooth the batter too much because a few lumps help the Peach Muffins bake tender instead of tough.
  • Scatter the crumb topping unevenly so some bites taste buttery and crisp while others show soft peach batter.
  • Cool the muffins before storing because trapped steam can make the golden tops lose their crumbly texture.

Storage Instructions

Store Peach Muffins in an airtight container once they are fully cool. Keep a small piece of paper towel under them so extra moisture does not soften the crumb topping. They keep well at room temperature for about two days when the kitchen is cool. Move them to the refrigerator if your home is warm or if the peaches are extra juicy.

For longer storage freeze the cooled muffins in a single layer first. Then place them in a freezer bag so the crumb topping does not press flat. Warm one muffin at a time until the center feels soft again. The peach pieces will taste juicy and the topping will regain a little texture.
